إن عمر الفن هو عمر الإنسان، وتاريخه هو تاريخ البشرية سواء أكانت مأساوية أو مبهجة حيث سجل الإنسان مشاعره ووجدانه على جذوع الأشجار وجدران الكهوف وأسطح العظام والعاج وكذلك على الصخور.
ولعل في مقولة ويلكنسون ما يغني عن التعقيب "مصر هي البكر العظمى لجميع المدنيات العالمية، لأنها أنارت بمفردها للعالم أجمع ظلمته.
وإذا كان الإنسان هو الكائن الوحيد الذي وهبته العناية الإلهية القدرة على الإحساس بالجمال وتذوقه لكل مظاهر الحياة، فإن الفنون هي وسيلته في إعادة صياغة الواقع في شكل إبداعات رائعة قد تحاكي الواقع أو تجسده أحياناً أو تسمو عليه في أحيان أخرى أو تختلف معه أو تقاضيه أو تباريه أو تكاشفه حقيقته أو ترفضه، أو تتعايش معه أو غير ذلك من الممارسات إلا أنها في النهاية تتفاعل معه وتنجب أو تنسخ منه أروع ما فيه.
ولما حفلت المكتبة العربية بالمتون التي أهتمت بالفنون الإسلامية على وجه الخصوص وبالفنون الحديثة والمعاصرة على وجه العموم مقابل قصور في البحث والدراسة عن الفنون القديمة فقد رأيت أن أملأ بعض هذا الفراغ لتكتمل منظومة الفنون وتأخذ ما تستحق من اهتمام، وذلك من خلال سبعة فصول هي: الفصل الأول: الفنون المصرية القديمة، الفصل الثاني: فنون بلاد الرافدين، الفصل الثالث: الفنون الفارسية القديمة، الفصل الرابع: الفنون الإغريقية، الفصل الخامس: الفنون الرومانية، الفصل السادس: الفنون القبطية، الفصل السابع: الفنون البيزنطية.
