منطقة الباحة تضم قبيلتي زهران وغامد، وهما قبيلتان عربيتان من أزد شنوءة، وظلت منطقة الباحة في معزل عن التأثيرات اللغوية الأجنبية، مما جعلها تحتفظ بمفردات وتراكيب قريبة إلى اللغة العربية الفصحى.
ولقد فقدت المعاجم العربية ثروة لغوية كبيرة بسبب عدم وصول من أعد تلك المعاجم إلى جبال السراة وتهامة، فعندما نجد كلمة مستعملة في تلك المناطق، ولا نجدها في المعاجم، فإن النقص والخلل في الغالب يكمن في المعاجم لعدم تسجيلها تلك الكلمات من مصدرها الأصلي الذي يعتبر مصدراً مهماً وأصيلاً من مصادر توثيق اللغة في العصور القديمة، وظل الناس يتوارثون الكلمات مع إختلافات يسيرة بين مكان وآخر، إلى أواخر فترة التغير البطيء التي تنتهي بعام 1390 بصدور أول خطة من خطط التنمية الخمسية، حيث بدأ التغير السريع وبدأ الناس يهجرون طرق الحياة القديمة، ومن ثم يهجرون الكلمات المرتبطة بها.
وفي هذا المعجم نحاول أن نرصد الكلمات التي تستعمل أو كانت تستعمل في الحياة اليومية في المنطقة، ونحاول قدر الإمكان معرفة جذورها وأصولها في المعاجم العربية، وقد صنفنا الكلمات حسب إستعمالها في المنطقة، ولم نحاول تجريد الكلمة إلا في حالات قليلة ونادرة.
وقد اعتمد الباحث في إعداد هذا المعجم على ما يعرفه من كلمات يستخدمها سكان منطقة الباحة في حياتهم اليوم وخاصة في فترة التغير البطيء عندما كانت اللغة مرتبطة بأدوات الحياة اليومية في الزراعة والبناء والعمل في المنزل وخارجه، وإستعان ببعض الكتب التي لها علاقة بموضوع المعجم، وحاول أن ينقل من المعاجم ما يثبت صحة تلك اللفظة، وأنها عربية فصيحة.
