يتناول هذا الكتاب فرعاً هاماً من العمارة الإسلامية ألا وهو العمارة المدنية، وقد قسم الكتاب إلى قسمين:
القسم الأول: يتناول فيه دراسة المنشآت التجارية، فيدرس فيه الخان والفندق والقيسارية والوكالة مع تأصيل نشأة كل منشأة ووقت ظهورها في مصر، وتزويد كل منشأة بالرسوم والهندسة التوضيحية، وكذلك يتناول أيضاً التكوين المعماري لتلك المنشآت والخصائص المميزة لها، كما أفرد في هذا الكتاب دراسة عن موظفي تلك المنشآت، ثم تبع ذلك بدراسة عن الحياة الاجتماعية في العصر العثماني، ودراسة مثل كامل من القرن 11هـ/17م لتلك المنشآت التي وجدت في مصر في العصر العثماني دراية أثرية وثائقية مع تزويد هذا المثل بالمساقط الأفقية والقطاعات الرأسية واللوحات الفوتوجرافية لزيادة الإيضاح.
أما القسم الثاني: فيتناول دراسة البيوت السكنية في مصر وتطورها حتى العصر العثماني، فيدرس في الفصل الأول البيوت الإسلامية حتى نهاية العصر المملوكي مع تناول أقوال بعض الرحالة عن تلك المنشآت في القاهرة بوجه خاص، ثم يتناول الفصل الثاني العناصر المعمارية المميزة للبيت الإسلامي في مصر العثمانية والباقية إلى الآن شاهداً على ذلك، كما يتضمن الفصل الثالث مثلاً كاملاً من هذه البيوت وهو منزل جمال الدين الذهبي(1047هـ/1637م)، وكذلك دراسة العناصر الزخرفية المميزة لذلك المثل مع تزويد كل ذلك بالمساقط الأفقية والقطاعات الرأسية والرسوم الإيضاحية واللوحات الفوتوجرافية لإتمام الفائدة للقارئ الكريم.
