يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع الهجرة من الريف إلى المدن، في المغرب، من وجهة النظر السوسيولوجية، وتهدف الدراسة عامة إلى الإحاطة بظاهرة الهجرة من الريف إلى المدن نظرياً وميدانياً، من خلال تقسيمها إلى تسعة فصول. يعرض الفصل الأول الأسس النظرية للدراسة فيتناول بالعرض والتحليل تحديد مفهوم المجتمع الريفي والمجتمع الحضري ومعايير التمييز بينهما.
وخصص الفصل الثاني للكلام على الريف في المغرب فاستعرض فيه تطور عدد سكان الريف المغربي من سنة 1900 إلى سنة 1985، وثم المقارنة بين المغرب وبين باقي الدول العربية من حيث أهمية عدد السكان الريفيين. ومن ثم تمت دراسة التوزيع الإقليمي لسان الريف، كما استعرض وجوه نشاط سكان الريف، ثم تناول بالتحليل التغيرات التي طرأت على المجتمع الريفي بعد الاستقلال، ثم ختم هذا الفصل بالكلام على أصل السكان في الريف المغربي.
وخصص الفصل الثالث لدراسة المجتمع الحضري في المغرب من حيث نشأة المراكز الحضرية وتطورها من حيث عدد السكان أو مقارنتها بالمدن العربية، وأنماطها، وتوزيعها الإقليمى، وتركيبها الداخلي-ووجوه نشاط سكانها. ويشك الفصل الرابع مدخلاً نظرياً ‘لى دراسة الهجرة، وتكلم فيه على الهجرات القديمة والحديثة، وعرفنا الهجرة وتكلم على سائر أنواعها، وانتقل لدراسة أسباب الهجرة من الريف إلى الحضر والعوامل المؤثرة فيها، والآثار المترتبة عليها، ثم عالج موضوع الانتخاب في الهجرة القروية وناقش القوانين التي تفسرها. وخصص الفصل الخامس لتقديم دراسة ميدانية تحليلية للهجرة من الريف إلى المدن في المغرب.
