إن تراث العراق التاريخي والأثري، الذي لا يقل عن تراث مصر قدماً وروعة هو اليوم مهدد بالزوال. فمنذ نيسان/إبريل عام 2003 طرد اللصوص علماء الآثار من خرائب تلال سومر وأكاد وأشور. وقد عجز الرئيس جورج د.بوش عن استباق نهب المؤسسات الثقافية العراقية الكبرى، مثل المكتبة الوطنية ومتحف بغداد لكنه مع ذلك كان قد أنذر باحتمال حدوث نهب عام، قبل الغزو من قبل القيادة العامة لجيش الولايات المتحدة، من وكالة الاستخبارات المركزية، من وزارة الخارجية والجمعية العلمية بكامل أعضائها. وبالرغم من هذه التحذيرات، فالمؤسسات الوحيدة، التي أمنت لها الحماية لدى دخول القوات الأميركية إلى بغداد، هي وزارة البترول.
واضطرت حكومة الولايات المتحدة أخيراً أن تتحرك إزاء النقمة التي أثارتها صورة سلبية الجيوش الأميركية لدى عرض نهب تراث بلاد ما بين النهرين على التليفزيون مباشرة. فعمدت إلى إزالة الشكوك بحملة إعادة الآثار المسروقة، وكان على دوائرها الخاصة، بسبب الضغوط الممارسة عليها، أن تفاوض المافيات التي تسيطر اليوم على التجارة العالمية للعاديات. فلم يكن منها إلا أن موهت حقيقة السرقة المكثفة التي تنعي علم الآثار في العراق.
