"العرب في العصور القديمة" كتاب يضم دراسة أرادها الباحث مدخلاً حضارياً لهذا التاريخ يمكن من فهمه في إطاره السليم، لا كحشد من الأحداث والأسماء والأوضاع تسرد كمقدمة مطورة لعصر لاحق، وإنما ككيان تاريخي يمتد عبر ستة عشر قرناً في الحدود المعروفة حتى الآن والتي تتسع من يوم إلى يوم كلما عثر المنقبون على أثر جديد أو على مجموعة من النقوش، وينتمي إلى عصر له أبعاده المميزة ومقوماته وعلاقاته وتياراته التي تتفق وهذه الأبعاد.
وفي حدود هذا الإطار الحضاري سارت الدراسة في خطين متوازيين ومتلازمين، فيما يخص الخط الأول حاول الباحث الإجابة على عدد من التساؤلات التي لم تطرح حتى الآن، أو التي طرحت كنوع من الترف الفكري أو الاستكمال الشكلي للموضوع، الذي يكتفي بالتعريف بالمسائل أو بمناقشتها دون أن يوضح موقعها من تاريخ المنطقة وقعها عليها.
وفي هذا الصدد كانت التساؤلات الرئيسية التي طرقها الباحث هي: أين تقف شبه الجزيرة العربية من المسار الحضاري الذي عرفه العالم في العصور القديمة، ما هو الأثر الذي تركته الظروف الطبيعية للمنطقة على مواردها الاقتصادية وعلى تكويناتها السياسية وأوضاعها الاجتماعية والدينية، ثم متى ظهرت هوية العرب في المجال الدولي وما هو الشكل الذي اتخذته هذه الهوية وسط قوى الشرق والغرب المتصارعة في العالم القديم.
أما الخط الآخر للباحث فهو يخط مصادر الدراسة. وقد هدف هنا إلى نقل تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام إلى دائرة الاعتماد على المصادر الجادة الوحيدة التي يمكن اعتمادها بشكل علمي، وهي المصادر المعاصرة لهذا التاريخ. منها الكثير من الآثار والنقوش والكتابات الكلاسيكية (اليونانية واللاتينية) التي عاصر كتابها ما كانوا يكتبون عنه.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك حاول الباحث حسم مسألة الانتفاع العلمي الكامل بمصدرين معاصرين أساسيين، طارحاً للمناقشة قيمة الاعتماد على الشعر الجاهلي كمصدر تاريخي، وإلى أي حد يجوز للدارسين اعتماد ذلك، كما حاول بيان كيفية الاعتماد على آيات القرآن الكريم بشكل علمي لا يزال الانتفاع به حتى الآن أقل بقليل.
