يعد الإجرام من أقدم الظواهر التي عرفتها المجتمعات الإنسانية، ولقد كانت ولا تزال محل إهتمام، بقصد إيجاد أفضل الحلول للحدّ منها، فمنذ القديم لم تركن البشرية على حالها الأول، ولم تقف عند مرحلة معينة، بل بذلت من الجهود - التي تنسب إلى إعمال العقل البشري - ما أدى إلى حصول تطور مذهل في الوقت الراهن، وإذا كان هدف الإنسان في ظل هذا التطور هو الحفاظ على كينونته بسلامة أمن شخصه وماله، فإنّ وَقْعَ الجريمة عليه لا يشكل خرقاً لحق خاص يتمتع به فحسب وإنما هي ذات ضرر لا ينحصر فيه وإنما يتعداه إلى كافة أفراد المجتمع بوجه عام، ولهذا بات من الضروري تشخيص مَن خرق قواعد النظام القانوني في المجتمع ولم يحترم قواعد الإنضباط التي توجب عليه الإنصياع لنصوصها مخاطبة إياه بنتيجة خرقها وهي إنزال العقوبة عليه، ولكنه لا يمكن أن يُصار إليها ما لم تتحقق عملية الكشف عن الحقيقة - والتي تتطلب الكشف عن الجريمة بما في ذلك الآثار التي تدل عليها، وطريقة إرتكابها، وكذا نسبة هذا الجرم إلى فاعله الحقيقي وهو الجاني - وهذا هو موضوع وهدف الإثبات الجنائي الذي لا يأتي إلا بعد بحث جادٍّ وشاقٍّ يسلتزم الدقة والتفكير الناضج، وذلك بالقيام بعدة إجراءات من شأنها الحصول على أدلة تساهم في إظهار الحقيقة.
