النظريات التي تتعرض لطبيعة فلسفة الدين تتباين فيما بينهما تبايناً واسعاً إلى درجة يبدو معها من المستحيل في الوقت الحاضر تحديد مدى إرتباط هذا المجال بمذهب واقعي في الألوهية، غير أن هناك نقطة سلبية واحدة يبدو أنها مستقرة إستقراراً بيناً.
فلئن كان هدف فلسفة معينة عن الدين أن تكون بديلاً عن المعرفة الميتافيزيقية عن الله، فلن يكون من الممكن التوفيق بينها وبين مذهب الألوهية الواقعي؛ غير أن معنى فلسفة الدين لا يحتاج إلى الإنحصار - بصورة تعسفية.
في التراث الذي تطوّر في أعقاب (كانط) الذي أعلن يأسه من كل ميتافيزيقا، أو تحول قانطاً، إلى نزعة إطلاقية عن الروح، فهناك - من الناحية الإيجابية - مكان فلسفة عن الدين تظل توليفاً معرفياً من دون أن تكون هي نفسها طريقة عملية تتناول الإله وعلاقة الإنسان به.
وهذه الفلسفة تجمع في بؤرة مشتركة الأجزاء اللازمة من الميتافيزيقا والأخلاق وعلم النفس وغيرها من الدراسات التي تتناول الصلة بين الله والإنسان.
أما كيف يمكن أن يتم هذا داخل فلسفة عن الدين تظل توليفاً معرفياً من دون أن تكون هي نفسها طريقة عملية للحياة، أو بديلاً من العبادة الدينية - فمسألة تظل من أبرز المسائل التي يحاول الألوهيون الواقعيون إرتيادها.
