يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ المغرب منذ القرن السادس عشر حتى وقتنا الحاضر، فهو اذن من كتب التاريخ العام. وليس معنى ذلك أنه قد بلغ فى التبسيط الى حد يمكن معه وصف الكتاب بأنه مدرسي. فقد اتبعنا فيه منهجا وسطا بين السرد التاريخي المبسط وبين التحليل الأكاديمي الذي يتناول كل مسألة تاريخية بالتفصيل.
وقد خصص القسم الأول لدراسة الفترة الممتدة من القرن السادس عشر حتى سنة 1830، ولم نتخذ هذا القرن بداية لموضوع الكتاب تقليداً لمناهج تاريخ أروبا حيث يطابق هذا القرن قيام النهضة، وبالتالي بداية العصور الحديثة، أنما لهذا الاختيار ما يبرره من واقع تاريخ المغرب. ففي القرن السادس عشر حدثت هناك تطورات سياسية واجتماعية هامة، ففيه تجدد الصراع بين أوربا والمسلمين فى الحوض الغربي للمتوسط، وفيه ظهرت النيابات العثمانية الثلاث: طرابلس، والجزائر، وتونس التي شاركت في المواجهة، بينما ظهرت أسرة الأشراف السعديين فى مراكش لنفس الهدف. وكذلك اتسع نشاط الطرق الصوفية.
أما القسم الثاني فقد خصص لدراسة الاستعمار الفرنسي وما يتعلق به من أزمات دبلوماسية مهدت للاحتلال العسكري. ولكنا حرصنا فى هذا القسم على أفراد فصول خاصة بنظم الادارة وأوجه الاستغلال المختلفة التي اتبعها الفرنسيون. وذلك لما لاحظنا من أن معظم الكتاب والمؤرخين العرب ركزوا اهتمامهم على الجانب الدبلوماسي عندما تناولوا علاقة فرنسا بالمغرب، ولايوجد حد زمني يفصل بين القسمين الثاني والثالث، فان هذا القسم الثالث قد خصص لدراسة الحركات القومية وتطورها حتى الاستقلال بالنسبة لتونس ومراكش، وحتى ثورة سنة 1954 بالنسبة للجزائر. ويعتبر هذا القسم والقسم الثاني على وجه الخصوص هما صلب الكتاب، بينما يمكن وصف القسم الأول بأنه تمهيد تاريخي. أما القسم الأخير الذي يتناول المشاكل المعاصرة والاتجاهات السياسية فى المغرب فقد أمتد فى هذه الطبعة على وجه الخصوص وأحتل فيها مكانا بارزا بالقياس الى الطبعات السابقة.
