لقد ذكر الحكماء: إن الإنسان لا يتحرك نحو المجهول، وبما أن مستقبلنا مجهولاً، مما جعله يبحث عن بصيص يشير ويبين هذا المستقبل المجهول. فمن هذا البصيص دراسته للتاريخ حيث إن معرفته للتاريخ يقوده إلى معرفة حاضره ومستقبله، فإن تعريف التاريخ: هو دراسة الماضي لمعرفة الحاضر. وقد أشار إلى ذلك القرآن الكريم قائلاً: "لتركبن طبقاً على طبق"، وهنالك قول يقولك الأفعال نفس الأفعال ولكن الوجوه تتغير.
وبهذه الطريقة فقد لاحظ الإنسان حاله ومستقبله ولكن يبقى هنالك غموض للمستقبل فإن دراسة التاريخ لا تعطيه النتيجة الأكيدة للمستقبل. فأخذ يفكر بابتكار جهاز ينقله إلى المستقبل وهو يحاول فيه لمعرفة مستقبله المجهول فأعطى له اسم (آلة الزمن) وهو خيال علمي وإلى الآن لم يكتشفه. ولكن هنالك علوم غريبة و قديمة تكشف المستقبل المجهول يضعف استخدامها تارة وتارة أخرى يقوي استخدامها ويرجعون لها، في معرفة حالهم وستقبلهم ألا وهي هذه العلوم التي تم اختيارها في هذا الكتاب، الكشف بالكتف، القرعة، الفنجان، الرمل، الاستحضار، وهذه العلوم كانت المؤلفة قد عملت بها لمدة طويلة، وقد لمست فيها فائدة في كشف الحال والاستقبال بما تخبره عن مجهول، فذكرها هنا لينتفع الراغبون بمعرفة كنهها كما انتفعت هي قبل ذلك.
