يعد ابن الرومي من أبرز الشعراء البغداديين في عصره الذين نلتمس صور الحياة من أشعارهم، وهو شاعر غاضب ساخط على الحياة وحظه فيها، ساخط على المجتمع وبعض أوضاعه، ماقد مر النقد لانحرافاته وتباين أحوال الناس فيه. هجاء قاس لكثير من النماذج البشرية التى لا تعجبه، لا يهمه مكانة هذه النماذج في مجتمعه، ولا ما سوف يناله من هجوه من تبعات.
وهذا البحث الذي نحن بصدده يعرض لدراسة هامة لشعر ابن الرومي، إذ يتناول جوانبه الأسلوبية، في ضوء الدراسات النقدية الحديثة والمعاصرة التى تتناول هذه الجوانب في النصوص الأدبية شعرية ونثرية. ويبني الدكتور شعيب بحثه على مقدمة أو مدخل وأبواب يعرض كل باب لمستوى الصوتي ليرقي لمفهوم الصوت وتجلياته في الشعر عامة وشعر ابن الرومي خاصة.
ويعرض الباحث في الباب الثاني جوانب الخيال الشعري عند ابن الرومي ممثلاً في الصور البيانية والصور الشعرية، فيحدثنا عن خاصة التصوير وأهمية الصورة في الشعر باعتبار دعاماته الشعرية.
ويتناول الباب الثالث الأسلوب والمعجم الشعري وهكذا يمضي الدكتور شعيب في بحثه قدماً متناولاً الجوانب اللغوية في البنية الأسلوبية لشعر ابن الرومي، ويفضل الحديث في عناصرها المختلفة التى تحدثت عنها علوم اللغة والبلاغة ويرى أنه لم يخرج غالباً عن البنية الأساسية المتعارف عليها والمأخوذ بها في الأساليب الشعرية، وغيرها من أساليب البيان. وهنا ينبغي أن نشير إلى أن هذه الدراسة لشعر ابن الرومي قد أضافت إلى ما قدم المتناولون لشعره من قبل اجتهادات في جوانب شعر الشاعر ألقت الأضواء على مقدرته الشعرية ومكانته بين شعراء العصر العباسي.
