رغم أن مسرحية "هذه حال الدنيا" استقبلت بفتور حين عرضت لأول مرة على مسرح لنكولن، فإنها صارت منذ ذلك الحين واحدة من أعظم الأعمال الفكرية في مجال الكوميديا الإنجليزية، وتدور أحداثها حول المال والجنس وكيف يؤثران في أحوال هذا العالم، كما تجسدها علاقة الحب بين ميلامانت وميرابيل، فقد اتفق الاثنان على تأسيس علاقة زواج خارج إطار الزواج التقليدي، تقوم هذه العلاقة على أساس معرفتهما بأحوال العالم، وحسب هذه المعرفة فإن العالم ملئ بالمنافقين، والحمقى وبالدسائس والمؤامرات، ولسوء الحظ، فإن دهاء كونجريف الفني وإطلاق حرية شخصياته في الحديث عن علاقاتهم الجنسية كان يتصادم مع تفكير بعض المفكرين الأخلاقين في ذلك الوقت، فما كتبه جيرمي كوليير في عام 1698 بعنوان "وجهة نظر في انحلال المسرح الإنجليزي وطقوسه الوثنية" كان هجوماً مباشراً على الكتاب من أمثال كونجريف وجون دريدن.
