الاتصال ظاهرة إنسانية اجتماعية ليست قاصرة على مجتمع أو عصر دون آخر، حيث إن معظم أنشطة الإنسان الشخصية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية تعتمد على ما يتمتع به من قدرات اتصالية بالآخرين، وهذه الظاهرة موجودة منذ بداية الخلق، ولكن نظراً لما يتمتع به المجتمع المعاصر من آليات تقنية وأدوات تكنولوجية هائلة فقد أطلق الكثير على هذا العصر تحديداً عصر الإنسان الاتصالي، فلم يعد الاتصال مظهراً من مظاهر الترف ولكنه حاجة ملحة فرضتها المتغيرات المتلاحقة في المجتمعات، حيث أصبح لا غنى عنه باعتباره وسيلة الآخرين في نقل خبراتهم وتجاربهم وأفكارهم ووسيلة المجتمعات في الحفاظ على تراثها ونقل معتقداتها وقيمها من جيل إلى آخر فمن خلاله نستطيع الانتقال من مكان إلى آخر دون أن نرهق أنفسنا بالذهاب والسفر إليه،حيث تتدخل التكنولوجيا لتنقل المكان إلينا في ظل عصر المعلومات والتبادل الثقافي.
وقد جلبت علينا هذه الثورة الاتصالية مؤسسات اجتماعية لم تكن معروفة وأصبح لها شأن كبير ودور متنامٍ في عملية التنشئة الاجتماعية والتربوية جنباً إلى جنب مع الدور الذي تقوم به الأسرة.
