على الرغم من نقل هذا الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية من الإنجليزية منذ أكثر من خمسة وثلاثين عاماً، فما يزا محتفظا بموقعه وأهميته في الدرس اللغوي بعامة، وفي علم المعنى أو للدلالة (semantics) على وجه الخصوص.
إنه يعرض للكلمة ومشكلاتها. والكلمة هي اللبنة الأساسية في بناء اللغة. وقد نجح المؤلف الأستاذ (ستيفن أولمان) في تجميع معظم مشكلات الكلمة في هذا الكتاب الصغير.
تناول الكلمة من جوانبها المختلفة. فحاول في البدء تحديد مفهومها، ودرج بعد إلى ذكر شئ من مشكلاتها الصوتية، وما يحدث لها في الكالام المنطوق من بتر أو تداخل وتشابك. ثم عرض لبعض ظواهرها الصرفية، فأشار إلى توليدها وتصريفها واشتقاقها.. إلخ.
وجاء العمل بعد ذلك مركزاً على جانبها الدلالى. وهنا انصرف المؤلف إلى بيان معنى المعني مع ذكر آراء الآخرين في هذا الشأن. وبين أن هناك مشكلات تعترض معنى الكلمة، مما يعرضه لغموض، وأشار بحق إلى أن السياق (بنوعيه المقالى والحالي) كفيل بالتفسير والتوضيح.
وفي النهاية جاء البحث في تغير معني الكلمة: ومعناه وأسبابه المنطقية أو الاجتماعية أو التاريخية أو النفسية، مفسراً ومؤيداً بالمثال والشواهد.
وهذا الكتاب بحق أشبه بمتن يجمع أصول العلم، ويغري الشادين من الباحثين الشبان (وغيرهم) إلى العود إليه مهما طال زمنه. وهومصدر مهم لحملة الدارسين من فيه من فضل سوى نقله الى الثقافة العربية. وقد رأينا ربط مادته بمشكلات اللغة العربية، فأتينا بمدخلات وتعليقات على الكتاب يزيد عددها على التسعين.
