لعبة الشطرنج هي حرب بين معسكرين تتساوى قواهما: معسكر أبيض وآخر أسود. هدف كل معسكر هو أسر شاه المعسكر الآخر وذلك بوضعه في مركز حرج لا يستطيع معه فكاكاً، ويسمى هذا الوضع (مات) فيقال عند النقلة الأخيرة "شاه مات"، ويعتبر خاسراً من أسر شاهه، أي من كان في وضع "شاه مات". أما إذا لم يتوصل أحد الطرفين لأسر شاه الطرف الآخر أو إذا لم يبق على رقعة الشطرنج القوى الكافية للطرفين لأسر الشاه، فيعتبر الطرفان متعادلين.
هذا وصف موجز للعبة الشطرنج، ولكن كيف تبدأ المعركة؟ وكيف توضع الأحجار؟. وما هي مهمة كل حجر من أحجار الشطرنج؟ هذا ما سيوضحه هذا الكتاب الذي يتميز بأنه يعرض للخطوة الأولى التي لا بد منها لكل راغب من التعرف على أصول هذه اللعبة، وثغراتها. ومما تجدر إشارته أن هذا الكتاب هو من إعداد عميد الشطرنج في لبنان "محمد مراد سكر". وهو بالتالي نتيجة خبرته الطويلة في هذا المجال الممتع.
