إن الدارس للأدب العربي يجده بستاناً متعدّد الألوان بأغراضه، متنوع الثمار بموضوعاته، ممثلاً النشاط الإنساني بجميع أشكاله. فيه الجدّ في موضوع الجدّ، كما فيه الهزلُ في موضوع الهزل، فلكل مقام مقال، كما أن لكل زمان لبوساً وأحوالاً. وإذا كان النشاط الإنساني يتجدّد بالفكاهة والضحك، والإنسان يميل بطبعه إليهما لأنه لا يحتمل الجد المتواصل، فلا يعني ذلك أن تتحول سيرته مزاحاً خالصاً وهزلاً دائماً. والترويح عن النفس من أعباء الحياة وهمومها لا يتناقض مع الحرص على المروءة، وإذا لم ينجُ من هذه المواقف أكثر الفئات جدّيةً ووقاراً في المجتمع الإسلامي. فبعض القضاة والفقهاء والمحدّثين والأدباء كان لهم نصيب - قلّ أو كثُر - في هذا المجال. ولعل إقبال هذه الجماعات من المسلمين على هذا اللون الأدبي، إنما كان بعد أن أدركوا أنها من الأمور المباحة. فقد رُوي عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: "روحوا القلوب ساعة بعد ساعة، فإن القلوب إذا كلّت عميت".
وفي هذا الكتاب مجموعة مختارة من الطرائف والنوادر تتناول الحكام والقضاة والتجار والأدباء والظرفاء والعقلاء والمجانين بعضها شعر وبعضها نثر وهي في مجملها كالفاكهة بعد الطعام.
