هو شاعر مصرى معاصر ولد ببلدة النخيلة بمحافظة أسيوط عام 1910, تخرج في كلية دار العلوم عام 1936.
نبغ في الشعر نبوغا مبكرًا فقد أصدر ديوانه الأول وهو طالب سنة 1935 بعنوان "أغانى الكوخ" و نال جائزة الدولة في الشعر سنة 1965 وله دواوين كثيرة منها "لابد" و"تائهون". توفي سنة 1977 في الكويت وعاد جثمانه ليدفن في مصر.

وقد صدرت مجموعة أشعاره الكاملة، وكان شعر محمود حسن إسماعيل موضوعاً لعدة رسائل جامعية باعتباره لوناً فريداً في الشعر العربي المعاصر لواحد من أبرز شعراء التجديد
ومن قصائده المغناة "النهر الخالد" و"دعاء الشرق" اللتان غناهما الموسيقار محمد عبد الوهاب،و"بغداد يا قلعة الأسود" التي غنتها أم كلثوم، و"نداء الماضي" التي غناها عبد الحليم حافظ، وأنشودة "يد الله" للمطربة نجاح سلام.

جائزة الدولة التشجيعية عام 1964
