إن علم النفس بصورة عامة علم قديم قدم الإنسان، لكـن تاريخه حديث. هذا العلم الذي أصبح يتفرع عنه في الوقت الحالي عدد كبير من الفروع، كل فـرع من هذه الفروع يختص بجانب معين من جوانب السلوك يتناوله بالدراسة والبحث. ويعتبر علم النفس المرضي أحد فروع علم النفس الهامة، والذي لقي تطوراً واسعاً في الفترة الأخيرة. إذ يهتم هذا الفرع بدراسة السلوك المضطرب والشاذ، ودراسة الأشخاص الذين يصدر عنهم هذا السلوك، وهو يرادف علم النفس الشواذ،ويختلف عن علم النفس الإكلينيكي، وعن علم الطب النفسي.
ويُعُّد هذا الكتاب مدخلاً مبسطاً لعلم النفس المرضي، والذي يتناول فصول عدة منها: معايير السواء والشذوذ وكيفية الكشف عن الأمراض النفسية والعقلية، والأسباب الكامنة وراء هذه الاضطرابات النفسية ثم يتطرق بشيء من الإيجاز عن بعض أشكال الاضطرابات النفسية التي يعاني منها بعض أفراد القوات المسلحة مثل القلق النفسي، وعصاب الحرب والاكتئاب، والفصام والإدمان على المخدرات بأنواعها المختلفة.
ويحدو كاتب هذه السطور الأمل في أن يساعد هذا الكتاب القارئ المبتدئ في قسم التوجيه والإعداد النفسي في التعرف على أشكال الاضطرابات النفسية التي يعانيها بعض العسكريين والمدنيين بغية تحويلهم إلى مشافي الأمراض النفسية لتلقي العلاج النفسي الملائم.
