ويبحث "المفصل في تاريخ الأدب العربي" في عصر صدر الإسلام، وفي الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية، وفي الحديث النبوي الشريف وأثره في اللغة، وفي الشعر والخطابة زمن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وفي زمن الحلفاء الراشدين. ويتضمن المفصل دراسة وافية عن الشعر والخطابة والكتابة والتأليف في العصرين الأموي والعباسي الأول. كما يدرس واقع الشعر والتدوين والتأليف والمقامات في العصر العباسي الثاني في فراس والعراق وخرسان ومصر والشام.
ويتضمن أيضاً دراسة للشعر في الدولة الايوبية، ولم يكتف المؤلفون بذلك، بل أفردوا دراسة عن الشعر والموشح والزجل والنثر والكتابة والخطابة والأدب والتفسير والفلسفة والطب في بلاد الأندلس، واثر هذه الآداب والعلوم في أوروبا. وبما أن الآداب والعلوم حلقة متصلة، فقد حرص المؤلفون على دراسة الأدب والشعر والنثر والكتابة والخطابة والتاريخ والجغرافيا في العهدين المملوكي والعثماني بما فيه عصر النهضة الحديثة في مصر وبلاد الشام.
هذا وقد ذيل الكتاب بتحقيق لطيف، تجلى عمل المحقق فيه بمراجعة وتحقيق وضبط الآيات القرآنية الكريمة، وضبط بعض الأعلام وذكر معلومات عن مدن ومناطق متعددة، بالإضافة إلى مقارنات، والإشارة إلى مصادر ومراجع يمكن أن تفيد في هذا الموضوع وذاك. كما وقام بضبط وتصحيح بعض العناوين الأساسية والفرعية لتوضيح الدراسة عن القارئ، وضبط وتحقيق الكثير من المعلومات التي تحتاج أساساً إلى ضبط وتدقيق.
