تعتبر الجغرافيا المناخية والنباتية من أهم الفروع الجغرافية، ولكنها على الرغم من ذلك لم تحظ بنصيب واف من اهتمام الجغرافيين العرب. فباستثناء القليل من المؤلفات التي وضعت في الجغرافيا المناخية والنباتية، أو الفصول التي خصصت لها في كتب الجغرافيا الطبيعية أو الجغرافيا العامة، فإن المكتبة العربية ما زالت تفتقر إلى المزيد من هذا الجانب الهام من الجوانب المعرفة الجغرافية.
وللجغرافيا المناخية والجغرافيا النباتية أهمية كبيرة بصفتها فرعين هامين للجغرافيا الطبيعية والحيوية، ولما لهما من صلة وطيدة بأفرع الجغرافيا الأخرى.
ومشكلات الجغرافيا المناخية والنباتية متعددة ومتشعبة، ويتطلب فهمها الإلمام بكثير من العلوم الأخرى مثل الأرصاد الجوية والتربة والزراعة والأحياء والتاريخ الطبيعي، ومن ثم فإنه من الصعب الإحاطة بكل شيء فيها. ولكنني قد حاولت جهدي أن أدرس بعناية الحقائق الرئيسية في جغرافية المناخ والنبات.
ولقد عنيت بمناقشة علاقة المناخ بالنبات وأثره في توزيع الغطاءات النباتية الطبيعية في العالم، وكذلك أهميتها الاقتصادية. كما أوليت اهتماماً خاصاً بدراسة التربة بصفتها عنصراً هاماً في الدراسات الجغرافية، وباعتبارها نتاجاً للعوامل الطبيعية والمناخية والحيوية، وعاملاً رئيسياً في الجغرافيا النبانية، وحلقة الوصل بينهما وبين الجغرافيا المناخية.
هذا وقد حاولت-ما أمكن-الاعتماد على أحداث ما نشر من مؤلفات في جغرافية المناخ والتربة والنبات، كما استفدت من البحوث التي أجرتها منظمة اليونسكو في مجالات التربة والنبات في المناطق الجافة. وقد زودت الكتاب بمجموعة من الخرائط والأشكال التوضيحية والرسوم البيانية والصور، كما ألحقته بقائمة للمصطلحات المناخية والبيدولوجية والنباتية المستخدمة في الكتاب، لعلها تفيد القارئ العربي وتعينه على قراءة المراجع الأجنبية، أو لعل فيها جديداً يفيد في تعريب المصطلحات الجغرافية وتوحيدها في العالم العربي.
