إن العلم بالمعنى الغربي الحديث science يُعنى بدراسة الظواهر الطبيعية وفهمها وإختبار فرضيات عن هذه الظواهر (إما بالملاحظة وإما بالتجربة).
وهو على الرغم من هذا ينطلق من فرضيات فلسفية خارج نطاق الإثبات التجريبي، لعل أهمّها الإفتراض الأول بأن هذا العالم حقيقي وليس وهماً، أي أن له وجود حقيقياً خارج الذهن.
والفلسفة هي استخدم العقل، أكرّر الفلسفة هي إستخدام العقل لبحث مسائل تتعلّق بطبيعة الوجود (الميتافيزيقيا)، أو أساليب التفكير (المنطق)، أو حدود المعرفة (نظرية المعرفة)، أو المعاني (فلسفة اللغة)، أو الإلتزام الأخلاقي (علم الأخلاق)، أو طبيعة الجمال أو طريقة عمل فروع المعرفة (فلسفة العلم، فلسفة التاريخ... إلخ).
لذا، فالملاحدة المتعصّبون عندما يهاجمون كل المعتقدات الدينية بذريعة علمية، فإنهم يعطون العلم مجالاً يتعدّى مجاله، أي يتجاوزون حدّ الإختبار بالملاحظة أو التجربة إلى ما وراء الطبيعة، وهو مجال خارج نطاق الإثبات التجريبي، لذا، فإن الإعتراضات الرئيسية للملاحدة الجدد طبيعتها فلسفية وليست علمية بالمعنى الغربي الحديث.
