يناقش الكتاب باستفاضة، مشاريع تطوير وتوسعة الحرم المكي الشريف، في إطار أوسع من التأريخ المعماري والعمراني للمدينة الإسلامية عمومًا ومدن الخليج العربي في نسخها المعاصرة خصوصًا، مع اهتمام خاص التاريخ المعماري والعمراني لمدينة مكة المكرمة، وبيان منزلتها لدى المسلمين، ثم توجيه النقد البناء لمشاريع التطوير والتوسعة تلك، وإيضاح مثالبها، وإيجاد بديل لها، يسهم في تيسير الحج على عموم المسلمين، ويحفظ قدسية المدينة، وينقذها مما سماه المؤلف تغول الرأسمالية المادية الباردة على بنيتها الحديثة، هذا الكتاب - إذن - محاولة في فهم هذا النمط الجديد من العمران، في جدليته مع بيئتة الطبيعية والإنسانية، ومحاولة قياس مدى توافق هذا النمط مع تلك البيئة التي وضع فيها، من حيث مدى قبولها أو رفضها له، خاصة في سياق مدينة عريقة مقدسة كمكة المكرمة.
