إن استراتيجية التفكير النقدي عند كانط في حقول المعرفة بدأت من خلال تحليل قدرات الذهن المعرفية، فالمسألة إذن تدور حول إمكان تلقي الموضوع ومعرفته ومن ثمة تعقّل هذه المعرفة، وكل ذلك قبلياً (أي بجثاً في العقل نفسه لا في موضوعاته، إلا أنه لن يكون بحثاً في الشروط السيكولوجية، أو في عوائق المعرفة العلمية، ولا تأريخاً للمذاهب الفلسفية، ولا حتى إنشاء لميتافيزيقا جديدة، بل سيكون نقداً للملكة المعرفية؛ أي تعييناً لشروط إمكان المعرفة القبيلة ومبادىء هذا الإمكان ونطاقه، فليس النقد هاهنا عند كانط نقداً للكتب أو المذاهب الفلسفية والتاريخية، بل نقداً لملكة المعرفة، ألا وهي العقل.
يبدو أيضاً أن هدف الفلسفة الكانطية هو بلوغ اقصى قدر ممكن من الكونية، وهذا ما يعكسه تحليل شروط تعقل المعرفة؛ أي دفعها إلى أقصى شمول ممكن، وأقصى توحيد ممكن، مع بقائها معرفة مطابقة، وهو الإستعمال المشروع لأفكار العقل؛ أي استعمالها استعمالاً تنظيمياً محايثاً، مما يعني أن ثمة استعمالاً غير مشروع للعقل ناتج عن الإخلال بشروط إمكان المعرفة النظرية يمد الفاهمة خارج حدود التجربة الممكنة واستعمال الأفكار استعمالاً ترنسندنتاليا إنشائياً، وفيه ينشط العقل ميتافيزيقيا ويتيه في الديالكتيك، ذلك أن للعقل البشري – فيما يقول كانط – في نوع من معارفه هذا القدر الخاص: وهو أن يكون مرهقاً بأسئلة لا يمكنه ردّها، لأنها مفروضة عليه بطبيعة العقل نفسه، ولا يمكنه أيضاً أن يجيب عنها، لأنها تتخطى كلياً قدرة العقل البشري.
إن المشروع الفلسفي الكانطي برمته هو مشروع تفكيكي – بنائي، ومن ثمة تصبح مسألة التفكير مع كانط ضد كانط يمكن خوضها بأمل كبير لا يخل من مجازفة في التحليل والإستنتاج، حتى أننا نجد "بول ري" يقول: "إنك لتشعر في مؤلفات كانط كما لو أنك في سوق ريفية، فبمقدورك أن تشتري منه أي شيء ترغب فيه، فستجد لديه حرية الإرادة وعبوديتها، والمذهب المثالي ودحضه، والإلحاد والإيمان بالرب الخيّر".
