رحلة مرآوية يتقابل فيها السفر واللغة. اللغة مرآة السفر، والسفر مرآة اللغة. لم يسع التمكروتي، في سفارته ما بين المشرق والمغرب، وهو مندوب السلطان المغربي أحمد المنصور الملقب بالذهبي للقاء السلطان العثماني مراد الثاني، إلى وضع ذاته في صلب رحلته، ولا إلى جعل هذه الذات المرآة التي تنعكس عليها الجغرافيا والتمظهرات الثقافية العامة من عمران وعادات، ولا سعى التمكروتي، وهذا هو المدهش في هذه الرحلة، إلى اكتساب بطولة أو إلى إعلاء شأن ذاته المغامرة، بل، على العكس من كل ذلك، سعى إلى تثبيت صورة الفقيه الملفع بعباءة الأدب، والأديب الملفع بعباءة الفقه.
في هذه الرحلة يصف الرحالة مدينة القسطنطينية ومراسيم الاستقبال في القصر، ومع أن قلم التمكروتي يحرن إذ يشيح ببصره عن المكامن، التي يمكن أن يقدح زنادها فينبعث منها المدهش والغريب مما شاهده في عاصمة الخلافة، فإن نص رحلته يعتبر، بامتياز، وثيقة بالغة الأهمية عن سلطنتي وسلطانين وقصرين، وعن الطريق بينهما في القرن السادس عشر. ولعل وصف أهوال البحر من بين أميز ما دونه هذا الرحالة المولع باللغة والشعر والبيان.
من جهة أخرى، وكما يلاحظ المحقق، فإن في مظنون التمكروتي أنه لا يمكن فهم الآني والآتي إلا بالاتكاء على الماضي، والماضي هنا هو ذاكرة التمكروتي المحشوة بالشعر والحكمة والبلاغة المنمطة المسكوكة التي لا يبذل صاحبها أي جهد في تطويعها. كل ديدنه ومبتغاه أن يكشف عن علو كعبه في الاستظهار.
اختارت لجنة التحكيم هذا النص لجائزة ابن بطوطة لتحقيق المخطوطات لقيمته التاريخية والأدبية، ولاستيفاء تحقيقه الشروط العلمية المطلوبة برصانة واقتدار.
