بمراوحة بين الواقع والخيال، وعبر إظهار مقصود للزمان والمكان، يأتي جديد الكاتب غسان حامد عمر" أربعون ألف قدمٍ فوق سطح الماء" وهو عمل سردي مبني على أدب الرحلة، ويحكي جزءاً من يوميات وبعض تفاصيل حياة طيّار، وهي "صفحات وُجدت ملقاة بجانب رصيف 7 في محطة قطارات مارليبون، تخص شخصاً يبدو أنه من منطقة الشرق الأوسط"، وهي رسائل يبدو أن صاحبها بعث بها إلى المؤلف يطلب منه نشرها فكان الرد: "العزيز تشارلز جرين "أود أن أشكرك لثقتك ومنحي هذه الفرصة. كما ترى، فإن هذه الصفحات تبدو كمذكرات يومية لشخص يبدو أنه طيّار وعاشق للسفر، فتراه تارةً يعتمر قبعة الطيّار وتارةً يعتمر قبعة الرحّال ...".
في غمرة هذه الأجواء يؤثث المؤلف مادة كتابه، مستخدماً لغة تُعنى بالتفاصيل والجزئيات والحركات، لغة محسوسة بقدر ما هي مجردة وقد بدا فيها المؤلف مولعاً بالأماكن والمدن والناس. لهذا فالعمل يمكن اعتباره مادة أنثروبولوجية غنية تحقق الفائدة، بالإضافة إلى ما تحدثه من متعة باعتبارها عملاً سردياً وفنياً، مليء بالحكايات والمغامرات.
يتألف الكتاب من ثلاثة أقسام: 1- عالم الطيران: ذكريات دوّنها المؤلف خلال فترة الدراسة والتدريب، 2- أدب الرحلة: مقالات كتبها المؤلف خلال رحلاته الجوية، أو خلال تنقلاته في بلدان العالم ومدنه، 3- حبر وأوراق متناثرة: يحتوي أفكاراً تداعت أمام مخيلة الطيّار، وهو معلّق بين الأرض والسماء.
