تهتم نظرية العبء المعرفي بالطريقة التي يوظف بها الفرد المعرفة والمعلومات المخزّنة لديه خلال التعلم وحل المشكلات، وتهدف هذه النظرية إلى مساعدة مصممي المناهج على التقليل من العبء المعرفي النتائج عن التخطيط الضعيف للمواد التعليمية بإستخدام إتجاه إنتاج المعلومات في كل من الذاكرة العاملة والذاكرة طويلة الأمد، وتستخدم هذه النظرية في الغالب العروض التعليمية المحوسبة، أو متعددة الوسائط.
ولا يمكن تقليل أهمية إستخدام نظريات العبء المعرفي في عملية التعلم، فمعرفة الطرق التي يتعلم بها الناس بشكل طبيعي يسمح لهم بتحرير عقولهم والتركيز على الرسالة التي ينبغي توصيلها بدلاً من إضاعة الوقت والطاقة الذهنية في دمج المعلومات التي تم عرضها بشكل سيء، وسيعمل المصممون جيداً على دمج مبادئ علم النفس المعرفي، ونظرية العبء المعرفي بشكل خاص لجعل خبرات المستخدم ذات كفاءة.
وقد برزت أهمية هذا الموضوع من خلال الإهتمام الذي جاء عليه من الباحثين في علم النفس التربوي والمعرفي، بالإضافة إلى ندرة المراجع والكتب والبحوث التي تطرقت لهذا الموضوع.
في ضوء ذلك، جاء إختيار الدكتور محمد يوسف الزعبي لدراسة موضوع العبء المعرفي بين النظرية والتطبيقي وذلك بهدف تحسين نتاج التعلم من خلال التعرف على العوامل المؤثرة في الذاكرة والتي تسهل عملية التعلم، وإكتساب المعرفة والخبرات مثل: مدة التعلم والعبء المعرفي في المادة التعليمية.
