بحلول الأربعينات من القرن العشرين تم اكتشاف الفيروسات التي صارت تدرس كجزء من علم الأحياء الدقيقة. وبالرغم من أهميتها العلمية والاقتصادية والطبية لم يتم اعتبارها علماً مستقلاً إلا بعد تطور التقنيات الحيوية وبزوغ علم البيولوجيا الجزيئية حيث ساعد كثيراً على ولادة علم الفيروسات الحديث خلال الربع الأخير من القرن المنصرم.
لقد سعى المختصون في علم الفيروسات على إضافة المعارف الرصينة التي أظهرت هيكل هذا العلم على أوضح صورة. ولهذا نتطلع إلى الباحثين والدارسين في هذا الاختصاص الدقيق لتقديم المزيد من هذه المعارف التي تكشف عن هوية هذه الأحياء التي ما زلنا نجهل الكثير عنها.
ومن هذا المنطلق سعيت على إعداد هذا الكتاب بشكل مبسط ليكون مرجعاً مفيداً للأساتذة والباحثين وللطلبة في معاهد وكليات الطب البشري والطب البيطري والصيدلة والعلوم والزراعة والتربية... كما يمكن اعتباره كتاباً تثقيفياً لعموم القراء من الناطقين باللغة العربية الذين يرومون الاستزادة من التعرف على هذا العلم الجديد. ومن أجل أن يصبح كتاباً مرجعياً لجامعاتنا، تم تنسيق فصول النصف الأول من الكتاب، أن تكون معلومات ومبادئ عامة من علم الفيروسات وهو جزء من كتابنا المرسوم الفيروسات-الرواشح الذي تم نشره عام 1983 بالتعاون مع الدكتور إحسان شفيق ديمرداغ، أما النصف الثاني مه يشرح عن بعض الفيروسات المهمة طبياً والتي ما وزالت في إعداد الفيروسات المكتشفة حديثاً والتي يمكننا اعتبارها فيروسات تحت المجهر وتحتاج إلى دراسات معمقة للكشف عنها وعن وسائل مقاومتها ومكافحتها.
