يختل مفهوم العقل بمكانة بارزة عند الفلاسفة والعلماء على حد سواء والعقل هو عبارة عن مجموعة الاستعدادات والقدرات العقلية والفكرية والعادات الذهنية. وقد مر مفهوم العقل بمراحل عديدة إذ يمتد جذوره إلى الفلسفة اليونانية حيث جعل إنكساغوراس العقل هو المحك الأساسي للمعرفة وجعله أفلاطون محط المعرفة. أما ظهور هذا المفهوم في العصر الحديث فقد كانت له مقدمات في الصراع الذي احتدم بين الفلسفة والدين أو بين العقل والنقل. وفي نزعة الشك التي شكلت بإمكان قيام معرفة يقينية.
والكتاب الذين بين أيدينا محاولة لإجابة على جملة من الأسئلة التي تشغل المفكرين مثل: ماهي طبيعة العقل، هل هو مادي أو روحي، الفرق بين العقل والمخ. يبحث المؤلف في الفصل الأول مفهوم العقل ومقارنة بمفهومات أخرى ويتناول علاقة العقل بالمخ والغريزة والمادة والإحساس والحدس والوجود. أما الفصل الثاني فهو يتناول مفهوم العقل من منظور تاريخي حيث كان العقل في الفكر اليوناني هو الذي يبث الانسجام في الكون. وفي الفصل الثالث يخصصه المؤلف للحديث عن المذهب المثالي ومفهوم العقل حيث ينشأ عن معالجة مبحث الاستمولوجيا مواقف عديدة ومذاهب متنوعة منها مثالية ذاتية وأخرى موضوعية، نقدية ومطلقة بالإضافة غلى النزعة الواقعية الساذجة والجديدة والنقدية وهناك التجريبية والظاهرية والوجودية والبراجماتية والأداتية. أما الفصل الرابع فهو يبحث في مفهوم العقل لدى التجربتين. في حين يبحث الفصل الخامس في موقف الفكر الفلسفي من العقل.
وقد توصل الدكتور إبراهيم مصطفى إبراهيم إلى أن العقل الإنساني يتصف بالوحدة والترابط وله قدرة على التعبير الدقيق. وقد تبين من خلال البحث أن مفهوم العقل في معناه ومبناه يختلف عن بقية المفاهيم الأخرى كالمخ والغريزة والمادة والإحساس والعقل يتجاوز جميع المناهج التي تحاول تقييده كالمناهج العقلية أو التجريبية أو النقدية.
