عمر بن "أبي ربيعة" شاعر الغزل الأكبر في تاريخ الأدب العربي، عاش للحب، ولا شيء غيره، ووهب حياته له، واتخذ منه متعته الكبرى ولعبته المفضلة، فلم تكن حياته إلا قصة حب طويلة متعددة الفصول والشخصيات، وكان كل شيء في حياته يهيء له السبيل للقيام بدور "الفتى الأول" في مسرحية الحبّ الضخمة التي كانت أحداثها تجري على مسرح المدن الحجازية التي عاش فيها الفتى الأرستقراطي الثري الجميل المدلل يستمتع بشبابه إلى أقصى الحدود، يتتبع جميلات عصره، ويلاحقهن في كل مكان، ويتغنى بجمالهن وجماله، ويصور حبه لهن وحبهن له، ويقصّ ما يدور بينه وبينهن من غزل وغرام.
تعددت في حياته وحبّه المحبوبات، وترددت في أخباره وشعره أسماء كثيرات منهن، يصرَّح بها في أكثر مواضعه، ويكنى عنها في بعضها، ومن أعماق تجربة الحبّ المتعددة الأحداث والشخصيات استطاع عمر أن يرسم في شعره صورة معبرة عن عالم الحبّ الذي عاش فيه وعن دنيا المرأة التي عاش لها، فكان بذلك أبرع شاعر رسم صورة للمرأة في شعره، تستوي في ذلك المرأة المعشوقة التي شغفته حباً، أو المرأة العاشقة التي شغفها حباً، والتي سجّل لها تلك الصورة الجديدة التي عرف بها في تاريخ الغزل العربي، هذه الصورة التي رسمها عمر للمرأة في شعره هي موضوع هذه الدراسة التي جاءت ضمن فصول أربعة حاول المؤلف من خلالها إلقاء الضوء على شعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة.
الفصل الأول تحدث فيه المؤلف عن دور المرأة في حياة عمر في مراحلها الثلاث: الطفولة، الشباب، والشيخوخة. أما الفصل الثاني فقد خصصه المؤلف للحديث عن الصورة الحسيّة للمرأة في شعر عمر. الفصل الثالث تناول الصورة المعنوية للمرأة كمقابل للصورة الحسية. أما الفصل الرابع فقد خصّص لدراسة طبيعة الجوّ النسائي بصفة عامة في شعر عمر. وقد اختتم المؤلف رسالته هذه بفصل نقدي ناقش فيه بعض القضايا وتعرض فيه لبعض الآراء التي قيلت في عمر وشعره وعلاقته بالمرأة.
