لقد فتح المسلمون بلاد الأندلس ووصلوا حتى جبال البرانس في أقصى شمالها، وعاشوا فيها نحواً من ثمانية قرون شيدوا فيها لأنفسهم العمائر من مساجد وقلاع وقصور كما أنشأوا الصناعات المختلفة، وليس هناك من شك في أن حضارتهم كانت أرقى من حضارة أهل البلاد فتركت آثارها هناك وخطت بالأندلس نحو التقدم خطوات واسعة.
في هذا الكتاب دراسة عن آثار الفنون الزخرفية الإسلامية في المغرب والأندلس، أرادها المؤلف الدكتور محمد عبد العزيز مرزوق، أستاذ الفنون الإسلامية بجامعة بغداد، أن تكون مرجعاً للطلاب الجامعيين وغير الجامعيين وذلك لندرة المراجع والمصادر في اللغة العربية.
وقد أشار المؤلف غلى أن الآثار الإسلامية لا تزال قائمة في تلك البلاد بالإضافة إلى وجود تحف أندلسية ومغربية في المتاحف المختلفة أفلتت من يد الدهر.
ولقد حرص المؤلف في هذا الكتاب أن يضمنه كل ما استفاد من دراسة لآثار المسلمين في المغرب والأندلس، وما رأه من تحف إسلامية مغربية وأندلسية في متاحف أوروبا وأمريكا وبعض متاحف الشرق وما اكتسبه من خبرة اثناء عمله أميناً لمتحف الفن الإسلامي بالقاهرة وأثناء تدريسه للفن الإسلامي في جامعات الإسكندرية والقاهرة وفيينا وبغداد بالإضافة إلى المصادر الغربية في هذا المجال.
