كان الراهب أبيب يحفظ "الجبتانا" عن ظهر قلب، بالصورة التى وصلت بها إليه، عبر خمسة وخمسين جيلاً (كما كان يقول)... كان يرددها بالقبطية الحبيبة إلة نفسه، والتى كان يعتبر أحد فقهاتها، (كثيراً ما ردد أن المترجمين الأجانب للخطوط المصرية، كانوا يلجئون إليه فى بعض الأحيان)... وكان يترجم ما يردده لنا بالعربية... وحفظت عنه الخط العام للحوادث، كما حفظت بعض الأسفار، وسجلت الكثير كتابة.
بدأت - وأنا طالب فى دار العلوم فى الخمسينيات - جمع وكتابة متن "الجبتانا" كاملاً، وأطلعت الراهب أبيب على عدة كراسات فوافق عليها... وكنت قد حررتها فى ستة عشر سفراً، كل سفر يحتوى على خمسة إصحاحات، وفق ما يحفظه الأب أبيب... توفى الراهب أبيب فى صيف 1959.. وبعد أن تخرجت فى دار العلوم أعدت الصياغة من واقع كراساتي، وكراسات الأب أبيب، وبرعاية الأنبا ثاؤوفيلس (عبد الشهيد صادق بانوب).
ثم جمعتني الظروف بالأستاذين إميل دوس ونصيف بطرس المحاميين، فأمداني بسخاء بكل ما كتب عن العصر العتيق وما قبله باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية... وكانت لديهما فكرة عامة عن "الجبتانا" من أحد المعمرين الأقباط من ببأ فى بنى سويف، وأمكناني من الاتصال به عن طريق الأستاذ منير جرجس المحامي فى بنى سويف... وتبينت أن ما يحفظه ذلك البباوي لا يختلف كثيراً عما كان يحفظه الأب أبيب، وإن كانت رواية الأب أبيب أكثر دقة واتساقاً.
وأعدت صياغة الجبتانا عدة مرات، بعد مراجعات للتاريخ القديم، ومراجعات لكراساتي وكراسات الأب أبيب، ولكل ما نقل عن الكتاب الكلاسيكيين من أمثال: هيكاتا المالطى (550ق.م)، هيرودوتس (450ق.م)، هيكاتا الأبدري (300ق.م)، مانيتون السمنودي (270ق.م)، ديودور الصقلي (60ق.م)، استرابون (27.م)، جوزيفوس (37.م) بلوتارخ (120.م) وآخرين.
وبعد، فهذه الصورة الأخيرة من الجبتانا، انتهيت منها فى السابع من هاتور سنة 1705 قبطية الموافق للسادس عشر من نوفمير 1988.م.
