يمثل كتاب "كارل فون كلاوزفنز" في الحرب إسهاماً فلسفياً كبيراً لفهم الحرب قدمه مؤلفه للأجيال التالية، فأثر في معظم العقائد العسكرية التي ظهرت بعده. ولكن معظم العقائد ونتائج التأثير، كانت مختلفة باختلاف فهم أنصار كلاوزفينز لآرائه وتفسيرهم لها. وكان هذا سبباً من أسباب المناقشات الكثيرة التي دارت حوله. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، يعتبر كتاب "في الحرب" تحليلاً عميقاً لمختلف جوانب ظاهرة الحرب، هذه الظاهرة التي عاصرت المجتمعات منذ نشوئها، وأثرت على تطورها أو انقراضها، وهو كتاب كلاسيكي ثمين، حافظت معظم أفكاره على جدتها، رغم مرور أكثر مائة وخمسة وأربعين عاماً على كتابه.
لكن هنالك رغم ذلك نقاطاً زال أوانها، وتجاوزها التطور العسكري والتقني، وعدّل بعض جوانبها. ولقد وقف المترجمان عند هذه النقاط بتعليق يقارن النظرية بالتطبيق في أيامنا هذه، مع الاحتفاظ بما جاء بالنص الفرنسي الأصلي احتراف منها لمبدأ الأمانة العلمية المطلقة، ورغبة في نقل النص الكامل بحذافيره بدون تعديل. كما قاما بإضافة بعض الهوامش والتعليقات، عند الضرورة لشرح أو تفصيل النظرية أو مقارنتها بفكرة أو نظرية جديد’، لا سيما عند اصطدام هذه النظرية بالواقع العربي، أو بالوضع العالمي الراهن، أو بمشاكل دول العالم الثالث أو تلامس بعض جوانبها. وبهذا يكون المترجمان قد أعدّا أول ترجمة عربية لهذا المؤلف الرائع الذي قرأه كتاب العسكريين في العالم، والذي لا يخلو كتاب عسكري رصين من بعض أفكاره. والأبعد من ذلك أن بعض وفي مفكري اليوم يعتقدون بأن تأثير هذا الكتاب على الجنس البشري كبير... يبلغ مستوى تأثير كتاب داروين "أصل الأنواع". أو كتاب كارل ماركس، "رأس المال".
