التفاعل هو كلمة السر التي نضعها في بيئات التعلم، التي نصممها وننتجها ونوظفها باستخدام نماذج التصميم التعليمي المختلفة. ويتنوع التفاعل ليشمل ببساطة تفاعل المتعم مع محتوى تعليمي تم إعداده جيداً من أجل الوصول إلى تفاعل كثيف موظف بشكل محدد من أجل رفع كفاءة بيئة التعلم وفاعليتها، وتعزيز المخرجات التعليمية، وجاء الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب (في طبعته الثانية) موضحاً لمعنى بيئات التعلم وتطبيقاتها وأنواعها وخصائصها بوجه عام، ومن ثم تم توضيح يبئات التعلم التي ليست بالضرورة متاحة على مواقع الانترنت (ولكن يمكنها ذلك)، والتي تم تمثيلها بالفصول الست التالية وهي بيئات تعلم يمكن تشغيلها مباشرة على أجهزة الكمبيوتر بدون الحاجة إلى التعامل معها عبر الانترنت، وفي هذه الحالة، يتم التفاعل بين المتعلم والمحتوى فقط، ولكن عند ربطها مواقع الانترنت تختلف أشكال التفاعل الممكنة لتشمل أيضاً التفاعل مع المعلم والأقران على حد سواء، وهذا هو ما يميز بيئات التعلم التي تم عرها في الفصول الخمس الأخيرة والتي لا يمكن التعامل معها إلا عبر شبكة الانترنت، وفيها تتطور أشكال التفاعل بالضرورة لتشمل تفاعاً مع المحتوى، وتفاعلاً مع المعلم، وتفاعلات متعددة مع الأقران.
وضمن ما تم عرضه من خصائص تميز هذه البيئات بوجه عام، فقد تم عرض الخصائص التي تميز كل منها، والتي تجعل منها منظومة متكاملة للتعلم يمكن توظيفها في عرض وتقديم محتوى يناسب طبيعتها. ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى شرح ما يتعلق بهذه البيئات وعرضه وتوثيقه، وأيضاً عرض كم واسع من نتائج البحوث التي بحثت في جوانب متعددة تتعلق ببيئات التعلم، كعناصر بنائها، ونماذج تصميمها وأشكال توظيفها، وتوصيات تحسينها مستقبلاً.
