هو بمثابة مرض تنكسي بدئي، هناك تعريف آخر للمرض: ألزهايمر أو الخرف هو مرض عقلي ذهاني، أو حالة مرضية تصيب الخلايا العصبية في المخ، وتؤدي إلى إفسادها وإلى انكماش حجم المخ.
كما يصيب الجزء المسؤول عن التفكير والذاكرة واللغة، إذ يتظاهر هذا المرض بنقص في الذاكرة والذكاء.
يمكن أن يتسبب في أمراض أخرى (اختلال العقل) وانخفاض القدرات العقلية لكبار السن.
الزهايمر بتعبير آخر، هو داء خطير ومميت (قاتل)، يتفاقم تدريجياً بسبب ترسب بعض البروتينات المسماة "أميلويد" على مسالك الأعصاب، مما يؤدي إلى خلق تشوهات في تلك المسالك. كما أن الملايين من خلال الأعصاب تتلف فيتقلص حجم المخ.
من التعريفات الأخرى للمرض: داء الزهايمر، هو عبارة عن مرض انحلالي تقدمي (متقدم) أو مترقي (أي مع ازدياد العمر وتقدمه)، للمخ، يقود في نهاية المطاف إلى الخرف أو العتة. وقد يبدأ ظهوره في منتصف العمر، وأكثر ما نصادفه عند كبار السن.
