يتناول هذا الكتاب بالدارسة، ظاهرة سلوك الأطفال في مجال التعبير الفني التشكيلي، هذه الظاهرة التي مازالت لا تأخذ حقها من الاهتمام الاجتماعي، ففي الوقت الذي تهتم فيه الأسرة مثلا بما يحدثه طفلها من آثار صوتيه لا تحمل صفة الدوام بقدر ما تحمل صفة الأمر، وترعي هذه الأصوات حتى يتمكن الطفل من لغته، تجدها الأسرة -لاتهتم بالآثار الخطية (الرسوم)، وغير الخطية التي يحدثها طفلها بالغم من أن هذه الآثار تظل لأطول فترة ملموسة ويسهل ملاحظتها... وإذا افترضنا أن الأسرة قد اهتمت، لا نضمن أنها سوف تقوم بتوجيه طفلها توجيهاً علمياً سلمياً يبعده عن تقمص أساليب فنية لغيره.
وأهمية هذا الكتاب في أنه يلقى الضوء على التعبير الفني التشكيلي للأطفال من حيث: المقصود به، وأهميته، وطرق البحث فيه، ودوافعه، ومعوقاته، والعوامل المؤثرة فيه وأهم نظرياته، ومراحل نموه، المسطح والمجسم، ودور المربين في توجيهه.
