حافظت المملكة العربية السعودية، منذ الستينيات، على تحالف استراتيجي مع الولايات المتحدة، ولطالما اتخذ هذا التحالف شكل توازن دبلوماسي دقيق.
واستمرّت العلاقة السعودية – الأميركية مستقرّة، رغم تغيّر الملوك والرؤساء، بسبب تقاطع المصالح، واعتماد كل من الدولتين على الأخرى في العديد من النواحي. فالولايات المتحدة تتّكل على نفط المملكة ونفوذها في محيطها، فيما تلجأ السعودية إلى أميركا لتثبيت أمنها وشرعيتها كلاعب أساسي في المنطقة.
يتعمّق نايف بن حثلين في العلاقة المركّبة بين البلدين. ويعرض مفاصلها التاريخية الأساسية، من التدخّل المصري في اليمن، مروراً بحربي 1967 و1973 بين العرب وإسرائيل، وصولاً إلى الحرب العراقية - الإيرانية وحربي الخليج اللتين خيضتا بقيادة أميركية. ويرى أن ما يجمع بين البلدين ضروري للاستقرار في الشرق الأوسط.
وعليه، يقدم هذا الكتاب تقييماً موضوعياً ومتبصراً لروابط جيوسياسية مستمرّة منذ أكثر من خمسة وأربعين عاماً.
