هذا الكتاب هو نتاج مبادرة جادّة وثمرة تعاون استثنائي بين أكثر من 80 طبيباً وباحثاً من المختصين في مختلف حقول الصحة العامة وشؤون الوطن العربي، الذين بذلوا جهداً قيِّماً لرسم صورة واضحة وتقديم توصيف علمي مدعّم بالوقائع للوضع الراهن للصحة العامة في الوطن العربي، ولعرض أبرز التحديات التي تواجهها البلدان العربية على هذا الصعيد، ولتشخيص مواطن الضعف ومكامن القوة، وللتعرُّف إلى الأولويات الصحية لديها، مقترحين بعض الحلول والمعالجات لتخطي مواطن الضعف هذه في الوضع الصحي العربي الراهن.
يرى الكتاب أن التطورات النسبية في التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي شهدها الوطن العربي، ولو على نحو متفاوت قطرياً ومناطقياً وطبقياً، أسفرت عن تطورات مقابلة في أوضاع الصحة العامة، ساهمت في رفع متوسط العمر المتوقع للإنسان، وفي التخلص من بعض الأمراض الوبائية، وفي رفع مستوى التمنيع ضد الأمراض المتوقّاة باللقاحات... وفي غيرها من مؤشرات الصحة العامة في الوطن العربي.
لكن، في المقابل، لا يزال الوطن العربي يواجه أوضاعاً خطيرة في الصحة العامة، لم يفلح في التخفيف من حدتها توافرُ شبكات حديثة موسّعة للبنية التحتية الصحية وتزايد القوى العاملة الصحية الماهرة ونشر التكنولوجيات الطبية على نطاق واسع؛ كارتفاع نسبة الوفيات الناجمة عن بعض الأمراض المعدية، وارتفاع وفيات الأطفال دون الخامسة، أو ارتفاع نسبة وفيات الأطفال الرضع والحديثي الولادة... فضلاً عن غياب المساواة في المكاسب الصحية بين بلد عربي وآخر، أو بين فئات اجتماعية مختلفة داخل البلد نفسه.
