سعى هذا الكتاب لتهذيب كتاب "المستطرف في كل فن مستظرف" لبهاء الدين الأبشيهي، وذلك لسببين: الأول: كثرة الأحاديث الضعيفة والموضوعة، ووفرتها المتناهية فيه. الثاني: روعة هذا الكتاب، وشموله فنوناً في الأدب، يصعب حصرها في كتاب واحد.
والمطلع على هذا المختصر سيجد اختلافاً كبيراً في ترتيب الكتاب، حيث لم يتقيد المحقق بترتيب مؤلفه الأبشيهي، بل قدم وأخر لمناسبة واضحة بين أبواب الكتاب، ودمج بعض الأبواب، لتصبح فصولاً تحت باب، كباب "محاسن الأخلاق"، وربما جعل للباب الواحد فصولاً. وحرصاً منه على إتمام الفائدة من هذا الكتاب فقد أضاف بعض النصوص القرآنية، والأحاديث النبوية الصحيحة، خصوصاً إذا لم يوجد في الباب أو الفصل آية أو حديث صحيح. وقد جعلته في ثلاثة وأربعين باباً، نذكر منها: في مباني الإسلام الخمسة، في فضل القرآن وآدابه، في العلم والأدب، في العقل والذكاء وذم الحمق، في الآداب والحكم، في البيان وذكر بعض الفصحاء، في الأجوبة المسكتة والمستحسنة، في القناعة وذم الحرص، في حفظ اللسان، في الملك والسلطان، في القضاء والرشوة، في الطعام والضيافة وآدابهما، في الظلم وسوء عاقبته، في الطيب والتطيب، في السفر والاغتراب والوداع والفراق وترك الإقامة بدار الهوان وحب الوطن والحنين إليه...
