ينجح هارون في النموّ من مُهرّبٍ مبتدئ إلى أحد محترفي التهريب بين عصابات الحيّ، فيتمكّن من مساعدة أهله على البقاء أحياء وسط الإحتلال الألماني، لكن بعد أن تنزع الأحداث منه كل فرد من عائلته وأصدقاءه بطريقة ما، لا يبقى أمامه سو الإلتحاق بالطبيب كورتشاك الذي يُدير ملجأ للإيتام، حينها فقط يشعر هارون أن إنسانيته راحت تتعافى رغم الموت المحدق بالجميع، وكي يستعيد طفولته المسلوبة، يبدأ بمواجهة العالم وصدّه مُحتمياً بأبواب الملجأ.
الطبيب كورتشاك (1878- 1942) Janusz Korczak والمعلّمة ستيفا Stefania (1886- 1942) Wilczyńska شخصيّتان حقيقيّتان من التراث اليهودي رفضتا الرّحيل إلى فلسطين لنجاة بأنفسهما، حيث بقيا معاً في وطنهما يواجهان الإحتلال الألماني سلميّاً.
أدارا ملجأ للإيتام كان يُعتبر دولةً بأكملها للإطفال: تُصدر الصُّحف، ولها برلمانها الخاصّ، وتقيم فعاليّاتها العموميّة.
