کتاب با یادداشت های صفیه میربابایی همسر باغچه بان آغاز می شود و با زندگینامه ی خود نوشت باغچه بان ادامه می یابد. او در این نوشته از سختی های راه گفته است و دردهایش. او خود، نوشته اش را به فریاد گوش خراشی تشبیه کرده است و امیداش این بوده است که: "این فریاد جانگدازی من، لااقل موجب عبرت خوانندگان باشد و بس". روشنگر تاریکی ها کتابی است تفکر برانگیز و اثر بخش.
این اثر نخستین جلد از مجموعه کتاب های زندگینامه کوشندگان راه بهزیستی کودکان ایران است که موسسه پژوهشی تاریخ ادبیات منتشر کرده است.
