جزيرة رودس من أشهر الجزر اليونانية التي تقع على البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وتعاقبَت القبائل على سُكنى الجزيرة، ولعلَّ من أشهر حوادثها الحربَ التي دارت بين الجيش العثماني بقيادة السلطان «محمد الفاتح» وبين الفرسان (الشفاليه)، وقد دامت هذه الحرب ثلاثةَ أشهُر، وانتهت بهزيمة العثمانيين. لكن لم تَدُم الحال طويلًا؛ فبعد أن تولَّى السلطان «سليمان القانوني» عرشَ الدولة العثمانية، قرَّر جزيرة رودس من أشهر الجزر اليونانية التي تقع على البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وتعاقبَت القبائل على سُكنى الجزيرة، ولعلَّ من أشهر حوادثها الحربَ التي دارت بين الجيش العثماني بقيادة السلطان «محمد الفاتح» وبين الفرسان (الشفاليه)، وقد دامت هذه الحرب ثلاثةَ أشهُر، وانتهت بهزيمة العثمانيين. لكن لم تَدُم الحال طويلًا؛ فبعد أن تولَّى السلطان «سليمان القانوني» عرشَ الدولة العثمانية، قرَّر تعزيز قوَّته البحرية وحاصَر الجزيرة حتى تَمكَّن منها. وفي هذا المؤلَّف القيِّم يحكي لنا الكاتبُ «حبيب غزالة» تاريخَها، ويُبين حدودَها الجغرافية وآثارها. كان «حبيب غزالة بك» قد سافَر عامَ ١٩١٠م إلى الجزيرة للاستجمام واكتشاف المدينة، ومِن فرط الروعة والانبهار بجمالها قرَّر تدوينَ تفاصيلها ودراسةَ تاريخها، معتمِدًا في ذلك على جمع المعلومات التي وردت عنها في المؤلَّفات القديمة والحديثة. يُعدُّ هذا المؤلَّف نموذجًا راقيًا لأدب الرحلات التاريخي التثقيفي؛ وهو مليء بالصور المُوضِّحة لتفاصيل الآثار، بالإضافة إلى شروحها المُرافِقة.
