"كنت خارجاً من إحدى قاعات المسرح حيث كنت أجلس كلّ مساء في المقصورة القريبة من الخشبة متأنّقاً بلباس العاشق الولهان. أحياناً كانت القاعة تضجّ بالحاضرين وتخلو تماماً منهم أحياناً أخرى. ولكن، قلّما كان يهمّني أن أراقب الردهة المأهولة بحفنة صغيرة من الهواة يصطفّون مستوين في مقصورات تزدان بتسريحاتهم وملابسهم التي بَطلت موضتها، أو أن أنضمّ إلى صالة نابضة مختلجة بالحياة تكلّل مدا "كنت خارجاً من إحدى قاعات المسرح حيث كنت أجلس كلّ مساء في المقصورة القريبة من الخشبة متأنّقاً بلباس العاشق الولهان. أحياناً كانت القاعة تضجّ بالحاضرين وتخلو تماماً منهم أحياناً أخرى. ولكن، قلّما كان يهمّني أن أراقب الردهة المأهولة بحفنة صغيرة من الهواة يصطفّون مستوين في مقصورات تزدان بتسريحاتهم وملابسهم التي بَطلت موضتها، أو أن أنضمّ إلى صالة نابضة مختلجة بالحياة تكلّل مدارجها كافّةً الشعورُ المزيّنةُ بالأزهار، والمجوهرات البرّاقة، والوجوه المشرقة. لم أكن أبالي بمشهد القاعة، ولا كانت المسرحيّة تستوقفني البتّة، إلّا في المشهد الثاني أو الثالث من التحفة الفنيّة المضجرة التي كانت تعرض آنذاك، حين يظهر طيف امرأةٍ حبيب ليضيء المساحة الفارغة، ويعيد بنفثةٍ واحدةٍ، بكلمةٍ واحدةٍ، الحياةَ إلى تلك الوجوه الباهتة المحدّقة بي...
كانت بهيّة الطلعة حين تنيرها أضواء المسرح من الأسفل، وشاحبة كاللّيل حين تُخفَضُ هذه الأنوار تاركةً للثريّا أن تنيرها من علٍ فتبين أكثر طبيعيّة، مشعّة بظلّ جمالها وحده، كمثلِ ربّات الفصول اللّواتي تعلو نجمةٌ جبهاتهنّ ويتوالين على الخلفيّات السمراء للّوحات الجداريّة في هيركولانيوم."
