قد يبدو هذا الكتاب كما لو أنه دفاع عن حقوق المرأة المفقودة على مدى التاريخ. لكن الكتاب في بعده الأعمق ليس كذلك. فالمؤلفة لا تركز على ما يدعى الصراع بين المرأة والرجل، بل تناقش بأسلوب ووسائل جديدة الجوانب السلبية في الثقافة السائدة التي تنظر إليها بوصفها ثقافة ذكورية محضة. وترى أنها مسؤولة عما حصل من تشوه لكل من المرأة والرجل والمجتمع نتيجة لذلك. وهذا ما يستدعي برأيها إعادة النظر في أسس الثقافة السائدة.
ومما ساعد المؤلفة على عرض أفكارها هو تجربتها الطويلة كطبيبة ومعالجة نفسية وأستاذة في ميدان التحليل النفسي. وهذا ما أتاح لها الفرصة للإستعانة بحالات وأشخاص عايشتهم لتقديم أفكارها والوصول إلى استنتاجاتها. وفي عرضها لهذه الحالات والأشخاص أضافت إلى الكتاب مسحة تشبه الرد الروائي الممتع.
ومن أهم ما جعل الكتاب جديراً بالقراءة والنقاش هو أن الكاتبة ترى أن عالم اليوم الزاخر بالعنف، والتدمير، والحروب، والظلم، والاضطهاد. هو نتاج الثقافة السائدة. فإذا كان الأمر كذلك، فهل يمكن وضع الخطط الشاملة والملائمة لتعديل أو تغيير هذه الثقافة بغية التخفيف، على الأقل، من الحالة القائمة التي تلف عالم اليوم؟
الإجابة ليست سهلة بالتأكيد، لكن أي قارئ قد يصل إلى استنتاجات ما؛ حين يقرأ الكتاب حتى الصفحة الأخيرة.
