ولد في الكفرون في سورية عام 1933 توفي والده عندما كان بسن العاشرة فانتقلت عائلته للعيش في بيروت حيث نشأ.
عملت أمه وكافحت لتعيل العائلة وتعلم أبناءها.
حصل على شهادتي البكالوريوس والماجستير في علم الاجتماع من الجامعة الاميركية في بيروت ثم دكتوراه في علم النفس الاجتماعي من جامعة متشغن في الولايات المتحدة ( آن آربور) 1966 .
له العديد من المؤلفات والمقالات المنشورة منها القمم الخضراء (1956) الصمت والمطر (1958) ستة أيام (1961) عودة الطائر إلى البحر (1969) الرحيل بين السهم والوتر (1979) طائر الحوم (1988) إنانة والنهر (1995) المدينة الملونة (2006)

يبحث هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المسائل التي تطرحها مهمات التعامل مع معضلات التنوّع والاندماج الاجتماعي السياسي داخل كل بلد عربي، وفيما بين البلاد العربية.
والكاتب، يصرّ على الاعتراف بوجود مختلف النزاعات والتوجّهات التي تتجاذب العرب بين الوحدة والانكفاء الذاتي، بين التقليد والحداثة، بين المطلق المقدس والنسبي العلماني، بين الغرب والشرق، وبين المستقبل والماضي، وبين الخاص والعام، و يبحث هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المسائل التي تطرحها مهمات التعامل مع معضلات التنوّع والاندماج الاجتماعي السياسي داخل كل بلد عربي، وفيما بين البلاد العربية.
والكاتب، يصرّ على الاعتراف بوجود مختلف النزاعات والتوجّهات التي تتجاذب العرب بين الوحدة والانكفاء الذاتي، بين التقليد والحداثة، بين المطلق المقدس والنسبي العلماني، بين الغرب والشرق، وبين المستقبل والماضي، وبين الخاص والعام، وبين الانتماء إلى الجماعة والانتماء إلى الأمة.
وقد اقتضت مهمة بحث هذه المسائل الشائكة أن تناولها المؤلِّف في سياقها الاجتماعي والتاريخي، وقدّم لها تفسيراً بنائياً، فركّز على دراسة البنية الطبقية والاختلاف في أنماط المعيشة، وما يترتب على ذلك من تنوّع في التنظيم الاجتماعي. وسعى من ثم إلى دراسة الثقافة بمختلف تشعباتها وتنوعاتها، كما تناول قضايا مستقبلية تتعلق بالتغيير التجاوزي، ومن خلال ذلك كلّه، قصد تلمّس مختلف جوانب التحوّلات في البنى الاجتماعية، كما في الحياة الثقافية.
ما يذكر في حقّ هذا الكتاب، والمؤلّف، أن هذا العمل هو نتيجة ما يزيد على ثلاثة عقود صرفها المؤلّف بالمواظبة على إجراء الأبحاث والدراسات الاجتماعية والثقافية
