لم ينظر إليها، كل ما فعله انه أجاب: "تصبحين على خير". ثم استقل عربته، فشعرت وكأنه اخذ معه قلبها، ولم تعترف لنفسها بأنها تحب الدوق إلا بعد ساعات جلست فيها في ظلام غرفتها إلى أن زحفت خيوط الفجر الفضية نحو السماء، عند ذلك فقط غلبها النوم وكلمة أحبك على شفتيها.
