یک خردهفرهنگ ایران عمیقا خاورمیانهای و صحرایی است، در حالی که یک بخشی دیگر از همین جامعه خود در هنگامهٔ چالش فرهنگِ دینی خاورمیانه و شمال آفریقا نسبت به مغربزمین -که اصطلاحاً «برخورد تمدنها» خوانده میشود- به یک جنبه کمتر توجه شده: طیف رنگهای مادون قرمز تا ماوراء بنفش در داخل هر فرهنگ و خصومت خردهفرهنگها که گاه آشتی ناپذیرتر از برخورد فرهنگهای دو ملت به نظر میرسد.
یک خردهفرهنگ ایران عمیقا خاورمیانهای و صحرایی است، در حالی که یک بخشی دیگر از همین جامعه خود را ذاتا، و نه تنها از نظر گرایش سیاسی، در حوزهٔ فرهنگ اقوام اروپایینژاد میداند.
بد گمانی، بد دلی، ناسازگاری و درگیری لایههای خردهفرهنگی، در نبردی محلی و درونی، موضوع مشاهدات این کتاب است. چنین نبردهایی سبب گرفتاریهای بینالمللی و تا حد زیادی تعیین کنندهٔ نتیجهٔ کشمکشهای ایران با قدرتهای خارجی است.
خردهفرهنگهای سرزمینی که امروزه ایران نام دارد همواره شکست از مهاجم خارجی را به سازش در میان خود ترجیح دادهاند. اولی مرثیهای است عظیم، دومی حقارتی است غیر قابل تصور.
