يتناول هذا الكتابُ موضوعاً حسّاساً يلمِّح له العنوان هو موضوعُ العلاقة بين العلم والدّين. ومن المعروف أن هذه العلاقة قد شابتها في العصور الوسطى وعصر النهضة في أوروبا بعضُ التوتَُّرات التي تمثَّلت في أشهر الأمثلة عليها في اضطرار غاليليو للتنصُّل من آرائه العلمية تحت ضغط الكنيسة، والتي تمثَّلت في أمريكا في القرن العشرين بالصراع بين المؤمنين بالقراءة الحرفية لما يرد في الكتاب يتناول هذا الكتابُ موضوعاً حسّاساً يلمِّح له العنوان هو موضوعُ العلاقة بين العلم والدّين. ومن المعروف أن هذه العلاقة قد شابتها في العصور الوسطى وعصر النهضة في أوروبا بعضُ التوتَُّرات التي تمثَّلت في أشهر الأمثلة عليها في اضطرار غاليليو للتنصُّل من آرائه العلمية تحت ضغط الكنيسة، والتي تمثَّلت في أمريكا في القرن العشرين بالصراع بين المؤمنين بالقراءة الحرفية لما يرد في الكتاب المقدَّس وما تقوله نظرية التطوُّر التي جاء بها دارْوِن.
والحلُّ الذي يقترحه المؤلِّف لا يتمثَّل في أن يتنازل أحدُ الجانبين للآخر عمّا يرى أنه هو الصواب، بل هو أن يجري الفصلُ بين الحقلين فصلاً تامّاً بحيث لا يبحث العلم في أمور الدّين ولا يبحث الدّين في أمور العلم. فمثلما أن العالِم لا يملك الحقَّ في الإفتاء في أمور الدّين، كذلك لا يملك عالم اللاهوت الحقَّ في أن يفتي في الأمور التي يتناولها العلم الطبيعي.
والمؤلِّف لا يدَّعي أن الحلَّ الذي يقترحه جديد. أما الجديد فيه فهو الأمثلة التي يختارها للتمثيل على ضرورة الفصل بين الحقلين. ومن أطرف ما في الكتاب استشهادُه بالعديد من رجال العلم الذين كانوا في الوقت نفسه من رجال الكنيسة، وتأكيدُه على أن الكنيسة الكاثوليكية مثلاً قد قبلت نظرية التطوُّر على أنها أمرٌ مفروغٌ منه، من دون التخلّي عن واجباتها الدينية. وليس ذلك مطلوباً منها لأن العلم والدّين صخرتان راسختان لا يتحقَّق امتلاء الحياة من دونهما بشرط ألا يتعدّى أيٌّ من الحقلين على الحقل الآخر.
