يتقاطع كتاب رولو، وإن حصره على مهامه في “الشرق الأوسط”، مع جزء كبير من حياته. وهو ما يدل على أن رولو استمد هيبته وقدرته على الإضافة ضمن المشهد الصحافي الفرنسي من موقعه في العالم العربي.

يمكن أن نرى رولو كصحافي يتحرّك في مساحتين، العالم العربي والحياة السياسية الفرنسية؛ ما يفسّر مسيرته التي أخذت منعطفاً رسمياً في وقت من الأوقات.
في المجال الأول، صنع أمجاده الصحافية مبكراً من خلال الاقتراب من شخصيات مثل حسن البنا وجمال عبد الناصر (حوار في 1963) وأبو إياد (صلاح خلف)، ثم قدّم واحدة من أبرز التغطيات للثورة الإيرانية (1979) كونه كان على علم بخلفية حياة الخميني في باريس.
بصعود ميتران للحكم (1981)، يبدو أن صداقته مع هذا الأخير دفعته إلى أضواء السياسة، فعُيّن سفيراً لبلاده في تونس سنتي 1985 و1986 وهي مرحلة اتسمت باستقرار “منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية” في تونس.
بنهاية حكم ميتران، عاد رولو إلى الصحافة، في جريدة “لوموند”، وقد اكتسب لقب “سفير العالم” (كلمة العالم تعني لوموند بالفرنسية) وباتت تجربته غذاء لنصوص بدت تقترب أكثر فأكثر من الأدب السياسي، حتى وهي تلتزم بأدق تفاصيل التوثيق الصحافي.
