بالنظر إلى المذاهب الفنية التقدمية، التي بدأ ظهورها منذ أواخر القرن الماضي، قد بلغت في القرن العشرين حدًا كبيرًا من النمو والازدهار، بتشعب مدارسها واتجاهاتها الفنية من جانب، كما أصبح انتشارها في الآونة الحاضرة على نطاق واسع، كموجة طاغية شملت العالم بأسره من جانب آخر، لذا كان من الطبيعي تأثر العدد الكبير من فنانينا التشكيليين بالجمهورية العربية المتحدة بهذه المذاهب، كما كان من المألوف في المعارض الفنية أن تسودها تلك الاتجاهات والتيارات المتباينة، بمختلف صور وأشكال هذه الفنون الحديثة، مما جعل الكثيرين من المعنيين بهذه الاتجاهات الفنية يتساءلون عن المراجع العربية، وذلك بالنظر إلى أن مكتبتنا العربية في حاجة ماسة إلى عدد غير قليل من الكتب الفنية في شتى جوانب الفن ونواحيه.
من أجل ذلك أقدم هذا الكتاب "مذاهب الفنون المعاصرة"، وقد بذلت جهدي قدر المستطاع، حتى يكون شاملًا لجميع النظريات الرئيسية لهذه المذاهب، مع الإفاضة في الشرح عنها وكذا المدارس الفنية المتشعبة منها، وبيان الأسس التي تستند إليها أساليب الأداء بمتنوع صورها ومختلف أشكالها، كي تكون جلية الهدف واضحة المرمى، ولما كان من الضروري للتعرف على أي مذهب أو اتجاه فني، لأولئك الرواد الأوائل، الذين شقوا طريقهم في تلك المسالك الوعرة، ذات الدروب المتشعبة، التي تعتبر رد فعل لجميع الأوضاع الكلاسيكية، ومختلف الصورة الفنية التي تنهج في أساليبها الأداء على المطابقة لأشكال الطبيعة، أن نلم بحياتهم والبيئات التي تقلبوا فيها، والظروف والملابسات التي أحاطت بهم، لذلك أعطيت اهتمامًا خاصًا لتحليل الشخصيات الرئيسية التي تعتبر ذات أثر هام في الحركة الفنية التقدمية بوجه عام، مع ذكر الآراء التي دونها النقاد والشراح حول أشخاصهم وأعمالهم.
