Per molto tempo la cultura europea ha sottovalutato, considerandole marginali, molte esperienze di governo di regine o reggenti. Solo recentemente gli studi hanno riconsiderato la ‘mostruosità’ della trasmissione dinastica del potere alle donne e hanno messo in dubbio che il principio che legittimava l’esclusione fosse fondato su ragioni legate al sesso per una divisione ‘ Per molto tempo la cultura europea ha sottovalutato, considerandole marginali, molte esperienze di governo di regine o reggenti. Solo recentemente gli studi hanno riconsiderato la ‘mostruosità’ della trasmissione dinastica del potere alle donne e hanno messo in dubbio che il principio che legittimava l’esclusione fosse fondato su ragioni legate al sesso per una divisione ‘naturale’ dei ruoli di genere. I casi delle impreviste successioni femminili al trono sono state rappresentate, nel Medioevo e nella prima età moderna, da ritratti a tinte fosche: sovrane schiave di vizi innominabili, inadeguate a esercitare il comando, incapaci per natura di essere alla testa di eserciti, facili prede di passioni incontrollate, streghe, avvelenatrici o incestuose. Se il governo andava a una donna ne derivavano effetti di instabilità e di disordine. Per controversie relative a contestate successioni femminili vennero combattute, ad esempio, la guerra dei Cento anni, le guerre d’Italia e la guerra settecentesca che contrastò il trono a Maria Teresa d’Austria. Le colpe attribuite al disordine sessuale e alla sfrenatezza femminile sono voci del lungo catalogo dei topoi misogini che hanno radicato a lungo nel senso comune l’associazione tra crisi politiche e comportamenti irragionevoli e disordinati delle donne. La pretesa anomalia della regalità femminile è stata un’eccezione felice solo quando le sovrane non erano né propriamente donne né propriamente sessuate: guerriere ‘virili’ o sante donne, emule della vergine Maria o della casta Diana.
